DAILY LIFE IN KANSAI

Welcome to this page where we centralize inquiries received over the course of the game so that players’ most pressing and universal concerns can be addressed as clearly as possible.

WHERE DOES MY CHARACTER GET MONEY?

Your character was given a “seal” on day 1 (along with a smartphone if they didn't already have one or wanted a new one). Most payments in the city occur by pressing this seal to check out items by a deduction from an account. This seal also records the character’s identity, making it easy to age-check them.

If your character “had money” at their canon point, including acknowledged trade goods such as gold pieces or jewels, they will have a portion transferred into their seal account.

Stuff usually costs the same in Kansai as real life, with just a couple notable exceptions: Some electronic devices are considered last-generation cheap or even vintage alternatives to new holotouch devices; and fresh produce as well as wood-derived products are highly expensive and rare.

The quickest and easiest way to get money is by getting into the pods at the start of each week as the overseers optionally request. You can also see if citizens want your own goods or services.

Our guidelines for initial funds are at most 50,000 yen, and for weekly pod funds, 25,000 yen. These are just guidelines and have not been posted in the IC community. Likewise, prices for particular items like big model anime swords are not posted. It is intended to provide a range that could be used for multiple small purchases with irregular timing, but rule out most luxury items.

WHAT ABOUT NON-SEAL MONEY?

There is cash in the setting that is interchangeable with seal money.

There is also “crypto”, a cryptocurrency received randomly that can be used to purchase black market items at the net cafe. This is not interchangeable with cash/seal money.

WHERE DOES MY CHARACTER GET OR CLEAN CLOTHES?

They show up in their canon outfit and are provided a handful of hospital outfits. Drones will come to the rooms starting at 12:00 PM and take out dirty clothes, returning them by 3:00 PM; they are cleaned extremely well but not modified (e.g. mended) in any other way. Clothing may include specialized materials such as feathers or leather, but true armor is to be polished separately and is not taken by the drones.

Clothes are available in a few different places around the city.

WHERE DOES MY CHARACTER GET FOOD AND DRINK?

There is simple food and drink provided at the hospital commissary from a series of vending machines (arguably instead a “dispensing” machine as it is free).

Food and drink is available in many places around the city. Alcoholic beverages as well; in the case of buying by seal, your age must 20+, though there is little reaction by citizens when they do see a teenager who has already successfully acquired an alcoholic beverage.

WHAT IF MY CHARACTER GOES SOMEWHERE ELSE?

This is an entirely welcome mechanic called trespassing! If the character has some means to travel quickly, they may find something interesting, especially if they have a destination in mind due to a clue. However, they will most likely eventually be accused of violating probation, especially if the authorities weren’t distracted during this misadventure. To say nothing else of what they may have wanted to retrieve or do in those places…

“Probation areas” are clarified in maps on the Akudama Go app; your smartphone and seal will both react and so will the nearby robots if their gaze is on you.

WHERE IS MY CHARACTER STAYING?

An individual room in the research hospital in Dotonbori. This room does not come with any kind of lock. However, simple locks can be freely requested from the overseers, and there are other sources of locks in the setting. Anyway, there is no enforcement if your character stays in a different individual room, though obviously with the power of player permission. The room is soundproof.

The assignment of lodging is referenced in Rule #2. Staying away from the research hospital for a long time, even within a probation area, may face consequences. Wandering even further from the city core of Kansai raises even more questions about what lies ahead within space and time.

The door of the room opens inward and is labelled plainly with a number.

WHAT IF MY CHARACTER COMMITS A CRIME, OTHER THAN THE MURDERS OF PLAYER CHARACTERS ON THURSDAY NIGHTS?

Kansai is a city-state with a dense population and a lot of smartphone use, not to mention a decent density of police robots. If you walk into a public space, do something, and walk out, it will almost definitely be noticed and reported, though in some shadier parts of the city, criminals favor their own means of enforcement. Furthermore, your character's face is plastered on billboards all over Kansai, so if your character is present during some extremely noticeable event such as an explosion or the disappearance of the location’s most valued item, the proprietor might be suspicious of them anyway. That said, petty theft executed with a bit of stealth for a fungible good is often successful.

“THE KARAOKE BAR IS CONQUERED BY THE X-CLASS AKUDAMA.” WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

On August 21st, Naniwa Year 31, after the first trial of the game, several player characters entered the karaoke bar. Kansai citizens had been absent from the place due to the recent carnage. The robot maintenance was subverted efficiently by the group, which began to help themselves to the drinks and snacks that were present. To avoid further conflict, the original proprietors have given up on the location, and Kansai residents have stopped patronizing. Additional stock will not be bought by them, but what was there can be accessed freely.

It was possible to buy time in a room, thereby unlocking it to enter and locking it when inside; this electronic system might be repurposed by the X-Class Akudama to better serve their needs.
