Welcome to the test drive for akudamax! Events and locations used in this test drive meme are unique to the meme.
They represent the game in spirit but are not considered game canon. Please enjoy!

ARRIVE
In the blink of an eye, you are somewhere you weren't supposed to be - unless by sheer coincidence you happened to be wandering the streets of Dotonbori. Regardless, you're in cyberpunk land now, and your crimes are beamed all over the city to warn its citizens of your presence. They call you by a strange title. You are avoided. Fortunately, a lot of the places here are self-automated, so you shouldn't have too much trouble gathering information from robots - as long as those robots aren't police robots. You'll have a little time to bump into others in the same situation first, but eventually they'll try to round you up.... best to decide if you're going to hide, run or fight.

THRIVE
Somehow, you've managed to avoid capture long enough to slip out of the laser eyes of the law - and you've wound up in another part of the city with fewer warnings of your presence. This is Shinsaibashi, an enormous shopping district. The vast array of establishments provide a good opportunity for procuring a disguise, or other useful goods. If nothing else, it's a little bit of peace to regroup.... or to rob some rich people before they find you again. Very few people carry cash, so you might wind up 'borrowing' a seal if you go that route. But I mean, they're calling you a criminal anyway, right? What's a few more crimes?

CONNIVE
While living large in Shinsaibashi and trying to figure out what's going on, you've wound up with a group of your fellow Akudama inside of the underground shopping mall, Crysta Nagahori, which seemingly lined the sides of a subway... but currently it is dark and abandoned. A bit spooky, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Suddenly, though, decrepit hologram projectors flicker to life, showing strange cartoon stick puppets of a pink bunny and a blue shark just bouncing about. The image occasionally glitches because of the faulty technology, making them look even creepier. And worse, they begin to talk - and being children's cartoon characters this sounds exactly as patronizing as you'd imagine.

"Hey Sharkie!"
"Yeah, Bunny?"
"These new X-Class Akudama are making way too much of a fuss, aren't they!"
"You said it, buddy! Just look at all these teeeeeeerrible things they did in the past week or so!"

A photo slides up from the bottom, with a funny sound effect, as it floats behind the little puppets who flip around to make horrified expressions. Several others follow from different sides, as if stacking up. The photos are of all of the X-Classes doing crimes in Kansai. Some of them, you might remember, if you actually did some crimes. Others not so much. The photos also make a point of showing off the flashy abilities they may have.

"I've seen a lot of things, Bunny, but organized Akudama? I didn't even think they were smart enough for that!"
"Well, you're not too bright yourself, Sharkie... ANYWAY, it's a big problem, so it needs big guns! We're still rebuilding after the Executioners turned out to be such bad ol' meanies, after all. Here's what the cops have to say!"
"Oh, I know! They said... ANY Akudama who kills one of these X-Classes will immediately get a full pardon for being on the side of justice now!"
"Of course, that includes the X-Classes themselves. It's possible that SOME of them are just here by mistake, even if they're mostly part of a big conspiracy! This is their chance to prove that to everyone! Yaaay!"
"But... don't they get some other kind of prize for doing that too?"
"You're right! They'll also get a whole basket of fruit!"
"WHOA! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH THAT WOULD COST!? NOW THAT'S LUXURY!!"
"Anyway, this offer only lasts a week, before we really get serious."

Bunny's voice deepens as it comes menacingly closer to the screen with its face in a dark shadow at that last part. Then it immediately bounces back and holds hands with Shark. Together, they bow.

"That's it for now! We're looking forward to the redemption arcs! Buh bye!"

Well... this is an awkward time to be in a place with a bunch of other X-Classes, isn't it?? What will you make of these freaks?

SURVIVE
a) It's been a while since the announcement, and whether you left the mall or not... now, you feel like you're being watched. Suddenly, you catch a glimpse of a laser. The person hunting you is the Super S-Class Akudama 'Sniper' - but if he has his way, he won't be called that for long. You'd better take cover and figure out where he is, FAST. Just getting away from him probably won't be enough.

b) Maybe killing isn't a big deal to you. Maybe you're hungry and that fruit looked really good. Maybe you just want to get the target off your own back. But for whatever reason... you've decided to go for the pardon. This too, you decide, is a form of survival. Now, how will you try to get another X-Class alone to go for the kill?

STRIVE
The week is almost over, but you've finally found what you need to move forward.

a) You have been approached by a talking cat, who upon further assessment is a hologram. The cat says he snuck in to advise you, since the plan went wrong. It turns out there really was a conspiracy - the mysterious person operating this cat offered a huge reward, enough that you agreed to come to this world and help him overthrow the government. It was memory loss the whole time... Now it's time to reach out to your apparent co-conspirators and figure out how you feel about being in yet another recycled Kodaka plot device.

b) Way to go, you managed to off someone, and now you've been invited to a special chamber to receive your fruit basket - and probably more importantly, your pardon. Others who did the same thing are with you. 3 Holographic Noh masks surround your lot, floating in golden rays and looking very grandiose. They are pleased with your work. So pleased, in fact, they've decided to hire you to do this sort of thing full time. Work for them, and with your abilities you could even be treated like superheroes.... As they drone on, you begin to feel strange, unnatural bliss, and see strange colors and lights. They must not trust you that much, if they're trying to brainwash you. It's not easy to resist, though. You'll have to work together to fight off the effects.

The wild card epilogue option! This test story is all fake anyway. Why don't you decide how it ends?

[ If only waking up somewhere strange was new to him.

His instincts are sharp, so the moment he realizes he's not where he was a moment ago (Shibuya), Ren ducks into an alley, pressed against the wall and practically vanishing in the shadows. A quick glance at his phone proves what he felt almost inately: that this isn't the Metaverse. In fact, outside the unfamiliar technology, he'd guess it was still Japan at least.

Then the projections start. At least he's not the only one, and seeing his code name (Joker) and his 'crimes' (assault, obstruction of business, intimidation, defamation, preparing and carrying weapons, conspiracy to commit, destruction of property, larceny, terrorism, murder) is hilariously familiar.]

I think it's longer than last time.

[He seems more amused than not, for anyone that's spotted him while watching the broadcast]

Thrive

[ He's lucky that he's still sitting on a nice little nest egg from the Metaverse, and while not all of it transferred enough did that he can get to work. Within a day he's managed to buy himself more fitting clothing, and between that and his glasses and natural skill at looking unassuming only those looking for 'Joker' would recognize him from the public service warnings still being broadcast.

He can be spotted in the Biriken Mart buying food and... tools? Right now he's passing a box cutter from hand to hand, testing its weight before deciding between it and a screwdriver.]

[He's not about to assume the other captives are any more criminals than he is- which doesn't mean they AREN'T just that he's not looking to judge. So when word gets around that there's a gathering he makes sure to show up. For now he stays on the edge of things, listening and nodding when someone looks his way, rarely giving a small word or two or agreement or apathy.

These aren't his team, so better to keep his head down.

Still, when the broadcast starts he can't resist laughing darkly behind his hand]

The special effects are pretty good.

the middle of a bustling city is definitely not where russell's supposed to be. he's either supposed to be in his jail cell or in the village in that happy dream that the scientists had concocted for him...

seeing his name on the billboard while his list of crimes (arson, murder, drug trafficking) are being displayed...oh that's not good. that's not good at all--

luckily he's small. maybe if he ducks his head, no one will notice him. ]

[ he figures that something like stealing isn't too big of a deal when everyone knows you're a murderer. russell "borrows" an oversized sweater, the hoodie covering his face.

and that small child is what you see as he points a box cutter at you. his hand is trembling, but his eyes are narrowed with anger. when he speaks, it can barely be heard over the crowd. ]

[ russell doesn't understand why a cat is talking to him. he also doesn't understand anything that it tells him. memory loss? overthrowing the government? even for a murderer like him...he's still just fourteen. everything about this has completely gone over his head.

he has to be hallucinating. maybe he was drugged somehow, and he doesn't remember it. either way, that was too weird.

russell turns around to see if anyone saw what he just experienced, and he just looks at them with a raised eyebrow, his expression otherwise emotionless. ]

[ Waking up somewhere strange isn't exactly a new thing to her, but there are only two places that she expects to be--so when she isn't there, when she isn't in her eleven year old body--that's the shocker there. Her breath stills and she can practically feel herself turn pale.

But even so, she's not stupid.

Alone in an unknown place with no familiar faces (that she's seen thus far, at least) is a terrifying thing, but she's done this before. In a smaller cage, but she's done things on her own before.

The buildings and scenery look so different to her, to someone from the 1980s. It looks like something from one of those TV shows that Keiichi would watch late night. But then she sees her face on holograms, eyes widening as her crimes are shown throughout, along with her code name of Trapmaster--

Sororicide.

Murder.

Illegal carrying of weapons.

Illegal drug usage.

Well, that's certainly all true, but she doesn't see it as this place listing her crimes from past worlds, but rather, that these must be the crimes of Houjou Satoko of this Fragment. She sighs, shaking her head as she speaks aloud, more to herself than anyone else, not noticing if anyone overhears her while the broadcast happens. ]

Why, the 'Houjou Satoko' of this world must be quite something to have accumulated all of these crimes and got caught! Ohohoho!

[ Satoko, laughing like that is only going to get you much more noticed more versus less. ]

[ Those... sure are cartoon characters. Satoko watches the photos, knowing that these most certainly aren't familiar to her, for the most part. But the fact that the cops say that murder gives a full pardon?

Well, that's certainly new.

Not to mention: ]

Pardoning a person who's done crimes by committing another crime? That sounds rather hypocritical, even if they say it's on the side of 'justice'.

[ Does she care though? Not in the slightest. But there isn't any fear in her eyes, and she doesn't even seem to be bothered that she's surrounded by many other X-classes. ]

[Damian would be lying if he said waking up on another planet was new to him, or an alternate universe that is completely obsessed with him as a means of entertainment, or even both. If anything, he's annoyed. Annoyed with himself that he somehow didn't see this coming when he rocked up to an island full of the liquids of the Lazarus pools.

But he is especially annoyed at these people for taking him. It doesn't take him long to slip into the shadows, he was trained by both the Bat and the Al-Ghul family. He gets a grip of what's happening when his name is broadcast on the screen, or his alias at least. (Robin) and then a lengthy list of his crimes which are frankly absurd for someone who is clearly no older than fourteen (assault, police battery, resisting arrest, torture, first degree murder, treason, arson, vandalism, wilfull extinction of an endangered species, terrorism, kidnapping, attempted fratricide). He watches all of it, stone-face, before he zeroes in on someone who likewise does not belong here and drops down from the ledge he was standing on.]

You aren't from here either, are you?

[His tone is tense but not hostile. He is, however, holding a batarang behind his back to permanently kneecap this person if they prove too much of a problem.]

[Damian has not bothered to use a disguise, instead preferring to hide almost exclusively and squat in empty apartment rooms or on rooftops with sleeping bags he's managed to procure. He's been getting equipment and supplies by finding people of this world he deems as corrupt and beating the living shit out of them and stealing their money.

Currently, however, this is too important, so he's here in a dress shirt and black pants with no mask on, and can be found in a book store, picking over whatever manga he can find, looking for his favourite series.]

CONNIVE

[Damian pipes up after the show is done, he's fairly far away from the main crowd, so he's mainly talking to whoever he deems clever enough to be on the outskirts and avoid people in this setting.]

Tt. As if they have any idea what justice even means. Winning a pardon by killing people? What a joke. If anyone deserves to die, it's the people who would run stupid games like this.

SURVIVE (A)

[Damian himself is just walking along, living his life, when he spots the red dot on someone. It takes him a split second to react, immediately flying to push you out of the way, allowing himself to be hit if need be and to wildly throw a heat-seeking batarang in a rough approximation of wherever the sniper might be.

After he lands, he gets to his feet in a crouch and looks over the person he just saved.]

See, I'm just pissed they think I'm that stupid. [If he's been keeping an eye out for details on other Akudama, the woman replying to him is recognizable from the initial broadcast as the X-Class listed as "Engineer", alongside a frankly excessive series of felonies.]

No contract? Nothing in writing? Not even a goddamn handshake, and they expect me to believe they're gonna hold up their end of the deal? Not expecting 'em to believe I got morals, but they could at least pretend to believe I got a brain.

And to top it all off, this shithole automatically detected him and labelled him as a criminal. Biker. Wanted for such things as vehicle theft, murder, drug dealing, illegal obtainment of weaponry, and blowing up a power plant/dam.

And for good reason, as onlookers were about to see.]</sub>

Well, can't just sit here and take it. _{[Revving his bike, it took off from a full stop as flames shot out the exhaust before slowing down, still way over the speed limit. His other hand found a six-shooter in his torn-sleeved jacket.]}

[Once he orients himself, he scans the city - is this another Singularity? He watches as people seem to give him a wide berth as he peers up at the screen. He suppose Ruler is technically his name in a sense, but he frowns as he sees what's attached to it: Impersonation of a Priest, Breach of Promise, Breaking and Entering, Obstruction of Justice, Manslaughter... and it goes on, and continues scrolling with more crimes as the Servant brushes himself off, doing a quick assessment. Drug Possession, Impersonation, Trespassing, Multiple accounts of Assault...]

So... this singularity is concerned about criminal matters?

[Honestly it wouldn't surprise him if Moriarty is behind it, but that man rarely pull the same trick twice]

[Soon as the red light appears on him, he seem to have vanish - though a few minutes later, Holmes reappears ducking under cover as he gestures for you to join him before Sniper changes targets or position]

Come on, you're a sitting duck out there - we need to keep moving and work on stopping him.

[She's not even bothering to look up at the screen now, sitting cross-legged on the floor with both hands wrist-deep in what looks like a disassembled police robot. Seems like she's taking it apart to see what makes it tick...]

[For him, it was almost like returning home. 'Almost', because this was clearly a future city, and also not Shinjuku, but the vibe remained the same.

The older man in the frankly flamboyant outfit seems almost relaxed, standing out in the open as the tv flashes his face, with his code name being 'Spider', and...

'...Grand Theft, Criminal Conspiracy, Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Murder, Attempt to Commit First Degree Murder, First Degree Murder, Racketeering, Burglary, Bribery, Extortion, Forgery, Fraud, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Cyber Crimes, Attempt to Commit Planetary Destruction...'

It....It keeps going. Good god, it keeps going. And through it all, the old man - Spider, apparently - just grins and nods, even as the normal people around him begin to inch away.]

Hm-hm....yes, everything seems to be in order. Well then - what kind of Singularity have I found myself in today? At the very least, they seem to take criminals seriously!

[He tops it off with a loud laugh, seemingly genuinely amused at the situation, looking all the world like a grandfather enjoying a particularly good joke.]

CONNIVE

A basket of fruit for a single head? ...Such an underpayment, even if fruit is in low supply.

[He doesn't blink an eye at his own abilities being portrayed, though it mostly seems to be showing off his incredible speed and strength, along with a certain cane-rifle....the same one he's currently leaning on, its literal bayonet point digging a bit into the floor.

Instead, he mostly seems...disapproving of the payment being offered.]

A pardon - though I have my suspicions - is the bare minimum, but one would think they would at least offer something in the way of money, as per a proper assassination.

[... Yeah, he sounds way too casual when he says that, like it's just one of those things you have to deal with, like a traffic jam on your way home from work.]

SURVIVE

[It's a quiet night, and Moriarty does, again, seem just as relaxed as he was as soon as he woke up here - and as other people, or even yourself, dive for cover or help others from the Sniper in their midst...he just gives a short, derisive laugh.]

Ah, I see...how unlucky for him, then.

[The red dot from Sniper's sights jitters up his torso - but he seems entirely calm and clear headed, glancing down once at it before setting his sights on a distant rooftop.]

.....Well? Take your shot.

[Up, up, up, resting on his forehead -

A shot rings out, and in a literal blur of motion, Moriarty's head effortlessly moves out of the way, his gaze suddenly narrowing as he smiles.

In the next instant, he's leapt straight up into the air, bypassing the roofs, hanging for a second in open space as he brings his rifle up and his blue eyes seem to glow in the night.]

A pity you faced off against an Archer.

[The rifle-cane fires, much quieter than the previous sniper shot - but the red dot vanishes as gravity drags the older man back to earth, landing gracefully like any gymnast after a perfectly done routine.

....And then he suddenly hunches backwards.]

AAGH, my back, my baaaaaaack--!! Gaah, the paaaaain~~!!!

[...Huh.]

It's truly such a laughable thing, if I'm to be honest.

[ There's a young teenager with a bit of a lisp, speaking in a rather forced ladylike tone with her arms crossed nearby wearing a rather amused grin as she answers him, even if he might not have been speaking to her in the first place. ]

If fruits are truly in demand though, perhaps a potential imbecile might even make the attempt to get rid of more... that is, if they give one basket per kill. Though I quite doubt that they would be so courteous.

I/ Arrival
[ On the billboard, Monika was simply known as "President." Her list of crimes was rather short compared to most others, but fairly impressive for someone who looed so sweet and kind: Psychological Torture, Mental Manipulation, Corruption, Premeditated Murder, Destruction of an Universe. That last one in particular was likely to raise some questions. How could anyone destroy an entire universe?

In all honesty, it was a rather simple affair when said universe was a video game. Anyone would be able to commit that crime, granted they had access to the "delete" button for their reality. And when said reality was a tiny video game where only four people existed? Monika felt it was a gross exaggeration to brand her guilty of having destroyed an entire universe.

Needless to say, she was less than happy at the state of... Everything. Being alive was a pleasant surprise. Having her sins plastered on the open for everyone to see, less so. Especially as it had been her hope to redeem herself. How could she ever hope to do so? ]

Oh gosh... How did I find myself in this mess?

[ Monika noticed her picture displayed her wearing her usual ponytail. So she immediately pulled on the ribbon holding her hair together, letting it flow freely. It wasn't going to do much to help her, but at least she may pass by people without immediately drawing attention.

... She's not stupid, she knows that's quite possibly the worst possible disguise ever. But in this world, it's not actually that uncommon. Besides, you'd never expect a criminal to actually be stupid enough to wear that, therefore if someone spots her they'll have to assume she's completely innocent of all crimes.

A pretty damning rap sheet, all things considered, and probably a good reason for the person it's describing to lie low for a while.

[ Okay, he gets it, finally. He's a wanted criminal in this world too, somehow, and it's not just the Navy who's out for his head. So. Lie low. He can debatably do that.

Except that it's a little harder to hide your most distinctive feature when it's, well, part of your face. He's pilfered a quick change of wardrobe (with a hasty mental apology to Jesus - it's for a good cause, "good cause" here meaning "not winding up back in the slammer this soon"), but anyone who cares to look is going to notice that wooden right eye pretty quickly. He considers busting out his old eyepatch, but that would probably draw even more attention to the area. So far, his best plan has been to keep his head down and hope nobody does care to look, but when he passes a particular store display, the lone rusty gear in his head starts turning. Hmm.

One shoplift later, and the first pirate to ever wear sunglasses strolls with a little more confidence down the streets of Shinsaibashi. Except that while this newfangled eyewear might have actually been pretty useful in the harsh sunlight reflecting off the Caribbean, the dimness combined with his natural lack of depth perception proves to make it a little more difficult navigating a crowded, unfamiliar city. At night.

Which is to say, he lasts about two minutes before smacking straight into some unfortunate fellow pedestrian. They go down in a sprawl of limbs, and Ragetti cringes as he tries to extricate himself: ]

Occasionally he tosses a blast of darkness up at his attacker, but he honestly seems more focused on diverting fire onto himself so others can take the man out]

[ Appearing in a completely different area at like this wasn't generally an uncommon thing for Julius. What was uncommon was how drastically different things were geography-wise from how they usually tended to be in fractured dimensions. The deviation must be particularly high, for things to be this drastically different, even if he doesn't remember entering one.

Regardless, the procedure was still the same – find information, find the divergence catalyst, and take care of it. It seemed pretty easy to disappear in the crowd here, with as busy and overwhelming as this city seemed to be, so moving around should be relatively painless.

Until the projections happen to cycle with his face with a code name (Crown, which he can't help but snort at derisively) and list of crimes (murder, attempted murder, hijacking a train, terrorism, causing the destruction of over a hundred dimensions). He frowns, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. ]

Well, so much for keeping a low profile.

But she's not the only one in this situation. If you're looking for someone to talk to who won't avoid you, she certainly fits that bill. Whether the person speaks up or not, if they look at her for too long, she'll speak up instead, turning her attention away from the various buildings.]

[Her tone is demanding, but not necessarily aggressive. Unfortunately it's not exactly helpful either.]

The girl tilts her head at the screen, making the pink dog collar around her neck rustle a bit, along with her baggy and worn clothing. Turning to the nearest person - which is probably you - she smiles first before pointing at the screen.]

[Shops! She knew about shops. Her master would take her to them sometimes on a walk, and she would get treats!

But since he wasn't here, and she looked like a person...people would want to pass around that 'money' thing for food, wouldn't they? And it's really, really hard to hunt here, because there's not many animals around!

People in the shopping district might suddenly hear some outcry, as what looks like an Albino wolfdog suddenly bursts out from a restaurant with a large hunk of raw meat in her mouth, galloping away as fast as her legs can carry her into a shady alleyway, where she happily begins to dig into her ill gotten gains.

Though, if you approach, or get to where she can notice you - instead of growling, she'll look up and wag her tail, her expression happy and excited. Come pet doggo!!]

[Rahti loved people, so - of course, she'd end up where the other people in her situation were, as well. When the puppet show starts, she looks interested and excited - before looking incredibly guilty as they show her running out from the restaurant with the meat she'd stolen in her wolfdog form.]

....I was hungry....

[She whines, before perking up at the rest of the broadcast...and then looking confused.]

...Just fruit? It would be a lot better if they offered meat. And people don't normally hunt each other, right? What's a 'pardon?'

[Look, she literally got to be a human like a week ago from her estimation, she's still running on Doggo Logic. Rahti tilts her head to the side as she thinks, making a little hum.]

I don't want to kill anyone if they haven't done anything to me....oh, but if they want to hunt me down, I'll hunt them down too!

[ If you'd been paying attention to the projections up to this point, you might have spotted this person under the name Alterant, with charges such as murder, armed battery, kidnapping, human trafficking, coercive control, grand theft, willfully poisoning... the list kept going like that for a while. A lot of the listed crimes were pretty bizarre and hard to understand, too.

In any case, they've gathered here now to watch this little cartoon show- though whether they can really be said to be watching it becomes debatable after a while, since partway through they seem to lose interest and pull a bottle of nail polish out of their bag to start painting their nails red. They seem to be doing pretty well for themself, honestly; in the time from their arrival to now, they've managed to acquire a designer purse, a luxurious full-skirted dress, and an impressive pair of heels. They clearly found a place to keep up with their hygiene and makeup, too.

They've finished the first coat on three fingers by the time the mascots are done dispensing the bounty. As they pause to blow on them, their gold eyes flick over- and meet yours. ]
