FAQ

What kind of game is AKUDAMAX?

It will be a scapegoat-style murdergame based on the anime ‘Akudama Drive’. Set in a cyberpunk future of the Kansai region of Japan, the original story follows a group of criminals known as Akudama as they cooperate to complete tasks for prize money offered from a mysterious benefactor, while they evade execution by the dystopian government. Previous knowledge of Akudama Drive will not be at all required to play in the game - though be aware that we are writing AKUDAMAX as a sequel to the anime in order to justify the changes necessary to turn it into a murdergame, and as such there will spoilers for the canon it’s based on.

For information on what a murdergame is, there is a guide here.

Sounds cool! When will we play? How many characters will there be?

Reserves will open on August 7th, 2021, at 12 PM EST. Each player will be allowed to reserve one (1) character in the game. There will also be a proxy reserve system, where a person (even a nonplayer) can submit a reserve on behalf of one (1) other person. (Obviously the player will have to verify the reserve at some point. Do not draft your friends this way.) Because murdergame reserves often fill up within seconds, proxy reserving is highly recommended for anyone who cannot reserve at this exact date and time.

There will be 25 slots in the game. 5 of these will be newbie slots set aside for players completely new to murdergames and 20 slots open to anyone. Anyone who reserves after their corresponding slots are full will be waitlisted. On Wednesday, August 11th, at 12 PM EST, any unclaimed newbie slots will expire and the waitlist will function as a first-come first-serve queue. Waitlisted players will also be contacted in the event of a "reserve drop", where someone else withdraws their reserve for any reason. Applications must be submitted 24 hours before the August 14th 12 PM game start.

There will also be a cast cap of two (2) characters per canon. There will be a franchise cap of four (4) characters per franchise. Final Fantasy and the Tales series are considered "franchises", where subcanons such as Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X are completely unrelated. Closely related alternate universes like the Danganronpa series and When They Cry series are considered "canons".

The game will start on Saturday, August 14th, 2021. The first week will last through Saturday, August 21st; there will then be the first motive announcement on Tuesday, August 24th, leading up to a body discovery on Friday, August 27th and a trial on Saturday, August 28th. The next three weeks will follow this pattern; then endgame week starting Sunday September 20th will culminate in "the mastermind trial" on Saturday September 25th. If it is necessary to shorten the game for any reason, endgame will be moved up to September 18th.

There will be a test drive meme on July 31st, so you can start playing some non-game-canon shenanigans then!

What kind of characters can be played in this game?

We will be accepting any characters from published media such as anime, games, books, and TV, as well as completely original characters or original characters from tabletop. Malleable protagonists are allowed, so long as only one is applied for per canon. However, we have decided against player-created AUs and fandom OCs for this particular go. This includes OCs for fandom tabletop, such as Lord of the Rings: The One Ring.

For this game, we are also restricting characters to those who have committed a felony or been arrested for a crime. The first refers to actually doing a felony whether or not they were caught by authorities, and the second can include wrongful arrests as well as misdemeanors that resulted in a guilty sentence / jail time. Specific cases can be discussed for characters who come from a lawless realm. These will be sufficient to label them as Akudama when arriving in the world of the game.

As such, we have also decided not to set a particular age cap, and will look at young characters on a case by case basis… Like, if your 11 year old has committed multiple felonies, they probably pass any maturity clause we’d try to set, you know?

Characters who meet these criteria for criminal records include the following:

  • Characters who committed crimes and were tried for them, such as Cameron Poe from Con Air.
  • Characters who committed crimes and are never properly tried for them, such as Light Yagami from Death Note.
  • Characters who are accused of committing crimes and have not yet had their name cleared, such as Maya Fey at certain specific canon points points in Ace Attorney.
  • Characters who are convicted of committing crimes and face the consequences of their verdict, even if their name is later cleared, such as Yasuhiro Isshiki from Collar x Malice.
  • Characters who are generally believed by their society to have committed a wrongdoing even if the society does not strictly speaking have a legal system, such as Lisa from Netflix Castlevania.

Are there any canons I can't app from?

Akudama Drive characters are not allowed, because the plot involves player characters coming from universes other than Akudama Drive. There are also a few canons that may not be allowed due to pervasive triggering material.

My character turns people into frogs/erases people's memories/does something that's impossible in real life! Are they still committing crimes?

Certainly! As long as they aren't just turning someone's hair blue for an hour, go ahead and explain that your character's actions caused grievous mental or bodily harm.

What is an ‘Akudama?’

This is what the characters in the world of Akudama Drive use when referring to wanted criminals of all types, ranked into classes. Persons with the longest sentences are registered as ‘S-Class Akudama.’ They are also given unique monikers related to their crime or overall aesthetic, such as ‘Hacker’, ‘Brawler’, ‘Swindler’, or ‘Doctor.’ They were once caught and dealt with by a self-explanatory organization called ‘Executioners’, but a recent controversy caused them to… disband, shall we say. This is a hot topic in Kansai and information a character could find out from just about anyone they asked. In this game, another classification exists. ‘X-Class Akudama’ will refer to Akudama from other dimensions, such as the player characters, who will be flagged as thus immediately upon their arrival in addition to being placed in a death game. Likewise, they’ll receive a moniker that will be the only name of theirs known to most NPCs.

So, our characters are all “criminals”…. But they still have to follow the IC rules? How does that make sense?

The powers that be would certainly prefer it if all the characters followed their rules, and they will do what they can to enforce them... But, for this game, the mods definitely expect a bit of bending and breaking of the rules from the characters. We encourage you to try things out, and will communicate the level of undesirable consequences if need be. As you might expect, the closer to ‘game breaking’ the attempt, the less chances of success.

This is supposed to be a murder mystery game, right? How will the characters be driven to murder, and what happens when someone is killed?

Each Tuesday, there will be a motive announcement leading characters to believe that committing the murder is the main way to receive a reward or avoid a threat. "If an X-class Akudama kills someone and gets away with it, they'll receive something they really want like the last Chaos Emerald!" "If none of the X-class Akudama kills someone, their worst secret will be revealed to the world!" Some player character will choose to kill after hearing this motive.

On Friday, there will be a post going up at 12 PM EST allowing characters to investigate the city, realize that one or more of their friends is dead meat, and search for other pertinent evidence. Saturday at 12 PM EST will see a post go up that takes place later on Friday, where the characters are gathered to present this evidence at a trial. At 7 PM EST, voting will close. After votes are counted, a new post will go up taking place IC on Saturday, announcing which person has been convicted and then depicting their execution. Characters may then thread their post-trial reactions, including if desired the creation of an "afterparty" entry in the community.

How exactly does voting work?

There will be an OOC post with screened comments where each player replies with the name of a character. IC however, there will not be a button that characters are forced to press and condemn someone to death. The people of Kansai are going to decide who lives or dies! Of course, they are not investigating the crime scenes themselves, where the dangerous superpowered X-Class Akudama have been active. Heavens no. They are watching a heavily edited broadcast of the trial after the fact on TV from the safety of their homes, listening to the X-Class Akudama make their arguments. If the majority of the Akudama believe it's the same person, then the majority of citizens will vote for that person. Makes sense! In cases with more conflict, some viewers may be swayed by one character's arguments, others by another. At the end, each character influences an equal share of the vote. Your character can still lie about who they want to see executed! Maybe their fans naturally relate to their true feelings? For whatever reason, the city seems to accept the final result, right or wrong.

Superpowered X-Class Akudama, you say? Let’s talk about character powers and items!

Let’s! We are excited to announce that AKUDAMAX will be a game that runs with minimal-to-no nerfing. Characters can come in with all of their powers intact, so long as those powers do not allow them to escape the basic confines of the RP. If that’s the case, we’re likely to suggest a change. You have an interdimensional teleporter? Now they’re more like an inter-city teleporter. Your character could disintegrate the whole city at once with a single thought? Whoa there bud, let’s keep it to a city block or something. Your character has precognition and can see all the murders in crystal clear detail before they even happen? BZZT, no, but maybe we’ll give you some vague hints for intrigue. And so on and so forth. Most characters that aren’t ridiculously overpowered will get to stay normal, but feel free to talk things out with us if you have any concerns.

With regards to items, characters can have those too, fully powered! Though anything too bonkers would be subject to similar nerfs, or at least practical limitations. For example, a character can bring their mecha, but anything bigger than Lagann might suffer from power failures or malfunctions. Again, communicate with us if you try to do anything huge with these powers. We will work with you on a creative solution that hopefully fits your canon.

Pets and companions are also fair game. We will allow speaking companions to be roleplayed by the player as additional NPCs to an extent, particularly if their major role is to serve as the character’s power source, such as a guardian ghost from Shaman King, a Kwami from Miraculous Ladybug, or a mech suit that talks such as Iron Man’s JARVIS.

As for characters with NO powers or special items to speak of? They might be given a little surprise to make them more capable!

My character isn't a physically typical human! Can I still app them?

Yes, in general we want to accept any character. Please make sure your app contains a clear explanation so we can confirm that it will work.

"Bodiless" characters are accepted. If your character has a visible form in canon, they will appear that way, and they will have the same tangibility status as in canon. Sora Akanegasaki from Ever17 is a visible, intangible character. Hanyuu from Higurashi: When They Cry is a visible, tangible character. As you can see, we err on the side of tangibility, such as The World Ends With You characters who are tangible within their own plane of existence. If your character is straight up a Hooloovoo from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or AM from I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, please contact us and we will work something out. This also applies for characters of a physical size that affects their participation in the game.

Characters with multiplicity of personality are accepted when they are "one character". This can include gestalt characters like Legion from Mass Effect or Kyuubey from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, or characters with dissociative identity disorder such as Malik and Yami Malik from Yugioh. However, Yugi Muto and Yami Yugi from Yugioh are two separate characters, as are Yuji Itadori and Suzuna from Jujutsu Kaisen.

Wait! What if I do want to play one of those characters, who share a body with someone else?

You will be allowed to play the character alone. We will work with you to choose a canon-appropriate solution, such as the character roaming as a ghost, or unnerved to find themselves in sole control of the body.

In the case that there is a second player of the other bodysharing partner, either separation or continued bodysharing will be chosen.

My character is hard to kill! How will that work in a murdergame?

No problem! We will make sure it is possible for them to be eliminated while still respecting their advantage their ability grants them in this particular area.

  • If your character has only one or a few fatal weaknesses, that is OK. Vampire that can only be killed by a stake to the heart? Great, whittle one up! Metal body? Sure, we've got lasers! Both the weakness itself and the supply of the weakness will be clearly communicated within the setting.

  • If your character can be killed but only in canon-specific circumstances, this will be nullified. God Tier characters from Homestuck are resuscitated in relation to the status on a clock; they will be out of range of this clock.

  • If your character is canonically completely impossible to kill, this will be nullified. If canon shows them regenerating or enduring in similar situations, like the Immortals in Baccano, they may retain such traits to a smaller degree before succumbing and dying. Otherwise they might be normal in this respect. We will outline clear boundaries with you.

  • If your character can be brought back to life in specific circumstances, that is fine as long as they can eventually be killed.

On a related note, if your character has the ability to bring other people back to life, in many situations they will sadly find that this does not work.

What if my character needs something specific to survive?
Characters with canon-specific needs to survive will be handled on a case by case basis; they may be personally supplied, find their supply within the larger setting, or be nullified. The trolls from Homestuck are dependent on a specific topical sleep aid called sopor slime, which could be personally supplied. Bender from Futurama is a robot dependent on alcohol-based fuels that could easily be found in the larger setting. The magical girl grief seed system from Puella Magi Madoka Magica are an example of a more elaborate canon-specific need where nullification might be considered, depending on the wishes of the players.

I want to play! How are the activity requirements?

We will be looking for a weekly submission of 20 comments total from your character. From the latest week, not trial or investigation, not backtagging! This can be taken from a minimum of two threads with different characters. It’s also acceptable to spread it out over more, with a minimum of 5 comments per thread. Ex. 4 threads with 5 comments each, or 1 thread with 10 + 2 threads with 5, etc. Living characters will also be expected to participate in the trials each Saturday. Please inform us mods if you need to be substantially absent for any given trial.

Once your character dies, all this becomes optional; just reply to the weekly activity post to "check in" so we know who is still participating in the graveyard.

By the way… Is it pronounced Akudama X or AkudaMAX?

Yes.

I have two questions. One, will characters whose powers render them practically indestructible except in extremely specific cases (i.e., Lake's body being unbreakable unless she's attacked with something that could shred high-density metal) be nerfed?

Two, would it be breaking the setting if I brought a character from Akudama Drive itself in? I've been looking for a place to put the legendary S-class Akudama SWINDLER for a while and it would be hysterical for a number of reasons if she got brought back here, but it's no prob if that breaks the conceit of the setting too much and I can't.

A) Does being wanted for a crime (sentenced to it) but not being trapped in traditional ways count?
B) If you're trapped in an untraditional way (but the name even involves the word 'prison'), does it count? I can explain more if necessary.

Quick question! When it comes to crimes do things that are crimes to the world at large even if they are TECHICALLY legal for the character's country of origin count? Specificly things like war crimes or political assassinations

Makes sense! The game I was thinking of specifically is final fantasy xiv- which is definitely weaker than TOR in characterization but still does have very clear canon events and some basic truths when it comes to the Warrior of Light.

I am here to ask more hypothetical questions!

1.) You said bodiless characters are accepted, does this include virtual versions of characters? Specifically canons where the characters are primarily virtual, do not know they're virtual, and their powers are well virtual too (unbeknowngst to them). This is for Quantum Devil Saga the LN version of Digital Devil Saga.

2.) See CW above but you said all character needs will be taken care of, and wanted to see if that includes characters who are cannibals? There is something in canon that can mute this need but I'd have more fun playing it without said item/influence. Will also warn appropriately where needed.

Hey there! I just saw the Black Market page and I had a couple of questions about how it works:

1. Since it was mentioned that character items could be included in there, would they also be sorted within the different tiers depending on the size/power of the items? What about items whose usefulness depends on specific contexts (e.g. where it could be powerful in a particular canon situation but not really as applicable in a multi-fandom setting), how would those be sorted (if they are sorted at all)?

2. With regards to what regains appear on the Black Market listing each week, is that random or would all character regains be available from the start?

3. Connected to question 2, but about how many items do you expect to have on the Black Market listing each week?

4. For items that aren't bought up the previous week, will they stay on the listings for subsequent weeks until they're bid on or are they Gone Forever after that week passes?

Thanks for your time, mods!

Hello mods! I've been perusing the pages and have a couple of questions about the Black Market.

  1. If a bid fails can you re-use the threads you already submitted?
  2. ICly will characters know if someone bids against them? Will they be able to make a counter-bid or can they only bid on that item once?
This last one is more of a concern than question, I guess. And could be me misunderstanding the system itself.

Conceptually, the bidding system is interesting but when the cost is already pretty high the additional fees/limited items feel almost punishing...? I'm just thinking of potentially dropping like... 50 comments for a normal sword only to be outbid. Or 99 to try and get it only to potentially lose it to RNG. That's a lot of comments for a relatively normal item. My concern is more for the C-tier items than B or A, but the overall balance feels skewed.

Would you consider starting the bid lower rather than capping so high...? At least for some of the C-tier items. Or adding a D-tier for super mundane stuff.

P.S. Just some quick clarification on what is meant by the following:

In addition, if means like soul gems or chakra serve to provide a strong sense of "death", this sensory information would validate the truth of mid-death.

I'm not 100% sure what this means in the case of chakra...? :?

To be fair Naruto zombies are aware they're dead though I'm not aware of it being related to the state of their chakra (though people can die if they run out of chakra, basically); Naruto afterlife is basically Who Even Knows SHRUG EMOJI so I figure even if chakra was present it wouldn't be a surefire indicator of stuff. owo
